Final Days in Cape Town

Settling back into the Cape Town lifestyle following our road trip was a cinch for me. The final week of the trip was to be spent hanging around the city, exploring the beaches, and sights around town. I was most happy about having a place to stay in Sea Point. When I lived in Gardens, I would often cycle round to Sea Point and explore the promenade, but I never felt like I really had a chance to explore thoroughly here. Our flat above the pool was perfectly located and we ended up visiting the pool on a number of occasions. There was a bike share right outside for cycling on the promenade, as well as the MyCiti bus which can take you to the waterfront or downtown.

I made a point to make it to one of my favorite spots in Cape Town as many times as I could. I must have climbed Lion’s Head 6-7 times while visiting, climbing in the morning, midday (to Wally’s Cave), and at sunset. I spent as much time up above the city as possible. I just love the perspective on the city, flora, and even the soundscape of the city and ocean from up on Signal Hill or Lion’s Head.

During the week Sarah and I attended the Cape Town Carnival Parade along Main Road in Green Point. It was great fun to be at the local event and witness the plethora of floats and party goers. We also attended a free concert by  The Rudimentals in De Waal Park, a place where I used to frequently run in the old neighborhood. Another highlight was exploring the Sandy Bay Shipwreck Hiking Trail with my friend Colly who I had not seen for a number of years. We hiked the coastal trail, exploring the shipwreck at the point and marveling in the views over the Atlantic.

It was an absolute delight to be back in Cape Town this year. I was so happy to have caught up with a number of friends while in town including Colly, Elizabeth, Joshua, Maria, Sam, and all my friends and colleagues at the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at the University of Cape Town. I was so happy to see you all again after five years. My time and friendships in Cape Town are incredibly important to me and a big part of who I am today. I hope to see you all again soon.
