Saturday was Earth Day, and we celebrated ours down at the Cape Town Waterfront. The city and Earth Hour supporters had organized for a concert to happen during the earth hour in our time zone. The idea behind Earth Hour is to encourage people to switch off all power sources around them for one hour of the year. This one hour of “lights out” is said to be an easy sacrifice and can save quite a bit of energy. Obviously the real goal is to bring awareness to energy conservation.
We enjoyed the usual action down at the waterfront and the lovely views as things got underway. Even the Mayor, Helen Zille was there to represent and give her blessing. She had arranged with the city of Cape Town to have the lights on Table Mountain to go out as well. It was really cool to see (or rather not see) the mountain in total darkness. We hit the lights, and lit a candle, then enjoyed the Cape Town symphony play beautifully under the light of the stars.
