The first major celebration and milestone of the approaching World Cup South Africa 2010. As the formals were taking care of the official drawing of teams at the convention centre, Cape Town city centre was a buzz as possibly the largest ever party took place on Long Street. A massive stage was set up at the top of Long St and local acts played in between announcements from the draw and messages from public figures. The energy was amazing and it seemed nearly all of Cape Town was trying to get onto Long St and join in the celebration.
We went down at the peak of the evening and were unable to even set foot on Long St! Only at Wale Street, nearly a kilometre down from the main stage could we get a look up towards the excitement. Everywhere we went there was a small informal party happening. Amazing energy, and from what we hear no major incidents. Nice job Cape Town!!!
Cape Town drew the following matches not including the semi’s:
11/06 20:30 – Uruguay – France
18/06 20:30 – England – Algeria
24/06 20:30 – Cameroon – Netherlands
14/06 20:30 – Italy – Paraguay
21/06 13:30 – Portugal – Korea DPR

World Cup safety centre set up at the foot of Kloof St
We could not get into Long St and we found that Loop St was also very busy
Lots of crowd pleasers
All of the arteries heading down to Long St were packed
At Wale St looking up towards the main stage. Amazing!!
Police did a great job controlling the crowd and maintaining safety.
