While we worked thoroughly through the mornings and early afternoon each day I always made time for a stroll on the beach in the afternoon when the heat subsided.
When I was flying out of Beira last time I saw from the air below a huge sandbar reaching out into the Indian Ocean just South of Macuti. I made tracks for this sandbar on the first day, which is at the mouth of a river. I was able to walk about a half kilometre out on the sandbar with the ocean all around me, it was stunning. A couple days later I returned to the sandbar to find it gone as the the tide had risen. In the other direction about 3km north of Macuti one finds a tiny fishing village. Here fisherman drag nets across the beach and pull in their catch. The fisherman showed us three massive red prawns, a number of regular sized prawns, a small shark and a couple snapper fish. We would likely have bought these had we taken any money on the walk. Talk about fresh fish, they were still flapping around in the sand!
