Sayulita, Mexico: A brief moment in time before the world changed

Jessica arranged a trip for us to Sayulita, Mexico for my 40th birthday celebration. How lucky am I? We had an outstanding visit to this little beach town, where you can walk pretty much anywhere feeling safe, explore the many fantastic restaurants, and have tons of awesome activities at your doorstep. Surfing, fishing, diving, paragliding, hiking, paddleboarding, you name it. It was a great spot.

We travelled at the end of February, 2020. At that time the Covid-19 pandemic was just starting to pick up and folks in the UK, Canada, and the US were starting to take note of cases making their way around the world. Without a travel advisory in place, we took the trip and tried to enjoy ourselves as best we could. To be honest, I was checking the news daily to see the latest happenings.

We returned home on March 12, 2020. It was not long after that the government of Canada advised all Canadians aboard to return home if as soon as possible. The pandemic really took hold at this time. I recall some chaos in the Puerto Vallarta International airport as we made our way, with travellers trying to get early flights or find direct routes home.

By the time we got home, Jessica learned her clinic had closed and she was unemployed. I soon thereafter learned that all of my teaching would be online and the campus was closed.

It was a wild time. Somehow we made it. While it seems a blur looking back, I am so happy we had this last pristine moment together before the world changed.
